Balthazar is a variant of Belshazzar and the traditional name given to one of the wise men, or Magi, who visited the infant Jesus and was said to have come from Arabia. Shakespeare also used the name for minor characters in The Comedy of Errors (1594) and The Merchant of Venice (1596).
