Meaning and history

Bambi is derived from the Italian bambina, meaning “young girl.” The American novelist Marjorie Benton Cooke used the name in her 1914 novel Bambi, and it was later given to a male deer in a Walt Disney cartoon based on Felix Salten’s 1923 Swiss novel.
