Meaning and history
Italian form of Beatrix. Beatrice Portinari (1266–1290) was the woman loved by the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, and she guides him through paradise in his epic poem the Divine Comedy (1321). The name is also used for a character in Shakespeare’s comedy Much Ado About Nothing (1599), where Beatrice and Benedick are tricked into confessing their love for each other.
