Anglicized form of the Welsh name Bedwyr, possibly derived from bedw meaning "birch." In Arthurian legend, Bedivere is one of the earliest Knights of the Round Table and King Arthur's loyal companion, remembered for reluctantly casting the sword Excalibur into a lake at Arthur's dying request.
