Belinda's origin is uncertain, though its elements may relate to Italian bella, meaning "beautiful," and Old German lind, meaning "soft," "flexible" or "tender," and by extension "snake" or "serpent." The name arose in the 17th century and was later used by Alexander Pope in The Rape of the Lock (1712).
