Italian feminine form of Benedict, from the Latin Benedictus meaning "blessed," formed from bene "well" and dicere "to speak." The 17th-century Italian nun Benedetta Carlini (1590-1661), whose claimed visions and later downfall at a convent in Pescia became the subject of the book Immodest Acts and the 2021 film Benedetta, is a notable historical bearer.
