Meaning and history
Possibly meaning “bee wolf” (essentially “bear”) from Old English beo “bee” and wulf “wolf,” though the first element may instead be beadu “battle,” Beowulf is the name of the hero of the anonymous 8th-century epic poem Beowulf. Set in Denmark, the poem recounts how he kills the monster Grendel and Grendel’s mother at King Hroðgar’s request, after which he becomes king of the Geats; in the poem’s ending, Beowulf, now old, slays a dragon but is fatally wounded in the attempt.
