Meaning and history

Blodeuwedd is a Welsh name meaning “face of flowers.” In the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi, Gwydion creates her from flowers to be the wife of his nephew Lleu Llaw Gyffes; she is first called Blodeuedd, meaning simply “flowers.” After she and her lover Gronw try to kill Lleu, Gwydion transforms her into an owl and gives her the name Blodeuwedd.
