Brand is a Germanic and Scandinavian masculine name from Old Norse brandr and related words meaning “sword,” “firebrand,” or “flaming piece of wood.” It also appears as an element in compound names and later became a surname. The different senses developed from imagery of burning or flashing metal. Notable bearers include American philosopher Brand Blanshard and South African cricketer Brand Pretorius. The name is unrelated to the modern commercial sense of a product brand.
