Meaning and history

Branwen means “white raven,” from Old Welsh bran “raven” and gwen “white, blessed.” In the Second Branch of the Mabinogi, she is said to be the daughter of Llŷr; after being mistreated by her husband Matholwch, the king of Ireland, she sent word to her brother Brân, king of Britain, who then led a costly invasion to rescue her, though she died of grief soon after returning.
