Meaning and history

Brigit is an Irish form and spelling variant of Brigid, from Old Irish Brigit, usually interpreted as “exalted one.” In Irish tradition Brigid was a major pre-Christian goddess associated with poetry, healing, and smithcraft. Saint Brigid of Kildare later became one of Ireland’s principal patron saints, and aspects of the traditions surrounding both figures overlap. A notable modern bearer was American poet Brigit Pegeen Kelly. Brigitte is a related continental European form.
