Brittany is a name derived from the region of Brittany in northwestern France, called Bretagne in French, which was named for Britons who settled there after the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the Anglo-Saxon invasions. As a given name, it became common in the United States in the early 1970s and rose quickly to third place for girls by 1989 before declining almost as sharply in the following years.
