Bronwen is seemingly derived from Welsh bron “breast” and gwen “white, blessed,” though it has sometimes occurred as a variant spelling of the legendary name Branwen. It has been used as a given name in Wales since the 19th century, and it is borne by a character in Richard Llewellyn’s 1939 novel How Green Was My Valley and its 1941 film adaptation.
