Brooklyn is a name derived from the Brooklyn borough of New York City, which was originally named after the Dutch town of Breukelen, a name meaning either “broken land” from Dutch breuk or “marsh land” from Dutch broek. It may also be understood as a blend of Brook and the popular suffix lyn. In the United States it is usually considered feminine, while in the United Kingdom it is more commonly used as a masculine name.
