Bruce comes from a Norman Scottish surname probably referring to Brix in France and famously borne by 14th-century Scottish king and independence leader Robert the Bruce. Used as an English-language given name since the 19th century, it became especially popular in the 1940s and the following decade. Bearers include Bruce Lee (1940–1973), Bruce Springsteen (1949–) and Bruce Willis (1955–), while Bruce Wayne and Bruce Banner are the identities of Batman, created in 1939, and the Hulk, created in 1962.
