Meaning and history
Brunhild is a German form of the ancient Germanic feminine name Brunhild, built from elements commonly interpreted as “armour” or “protection” and “battle.” The cognate Brynhildr is central to Norse heroic legend, while Brünhild appears in the German Nibelungen tradition. Richard Wagner used Brünnhilde for the Valkyrie in his operatic cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, reinforcing the name’s literary and musical importance. Historical bearer Brunhilda of Austrasia was a powerful sixth-century Visigothic princess and Frankish queen.
