Cadell is a rare Welsh masculine name derived from Old Welsh Catell, formed from cat, “battle,” with a diminutive suffix. It was borne by several early Welsh rulers, including two kings of Powys and Cadell ap Rhodri, a ninth-century king of Seisyllwg whose descendants helped shape the medieval kingdom of Deheubarth. The name also appears in Welsh genealogical traditions. Modern given-name bearers with this exact spelling are uncommon; Australian cyclist Cadel Evans uses the related one-l spelling.
