From a Roman cognomen that possibly meant “hairy,” from Latin caesaries “hair,” Caesar was borne by Julius Caesar and his adopted son Julius Caesar Octavianus, commonly known as Augustus, both rulers of the Roman Empire in the 1st century BC, and later became a title used by subsequent emperors.
