Meaning and history
Camelia has two related but distinct modern explanations. It is often a spelling variant of Camellia, the flowering plant named by Linnaeus in honour of the missionary and botanist Georg Joseph Kamel. In Romanian and other European use, it may also be influenced by Camilla, an ancient Roman name of uncertain origin. Notable bearers include Romanian Olympic swimmer Camelia Potec and Romanian politician Camelia Bogdănici. The flower association is modern, not an ancient Roman meaning.
