Meaning and history
Carmen is the medieval Spanish form of Carmel, found in the Marian title Nuestra Señora del Carmen, meaning “Our Lady of Mount Carmel.” Its spelling was later influenced by association with the Latin word carmen, meaning “song.” The name was also borne by the title character in George Bizet’s opera Carmen (1875).
