Castor comes from the Greek name Κάστωρ (Kastor), possibly linked to κέκασμαι (kekasmai), meaning “to excel” or “to shine,” though it may also come from κάστωρ (kastor), “beaver,” despite the fact that Greek legends about Castor do not mention beavers, which were foreign to the Greeks. In Greek mythology, Castor was a son of Zeus and the twin brother of Pollux, and the constellation Gemini, representing the two brothers, includes a star with this name.
