Meaning and history
Cédric was invented by Walter Scott for a character in his 1819 novel Ivanhoe, apparently modeled on the actual name Cerdic, the semi-legendary 6th-century founder of Wessex. The meaning of Cerdic is uncertain and it does not seem to be of Old English origin; it may be related to the Brythonic name Caratācos. The name was later used by Frances Hodgson Burnett for the main character in Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886).
