Meaning and history
Chad comes from the Old English name Ceadda, whose meaning is unknown but may be based on Old Welsh cat, meaning “battle”; it was the name of a 7th-century English saint. The name was used mainly by Catholics and remained rare until the 1960s, when it became more common in the general population. It is also the name of a country in Africa, though that name has a different origin.
