Meaning and history

Charity comes from the English word charity, ultimately from Late Latin caritas meaning “dearness, esteem, love,” itself derived from Latin carus, “dear, beloved.” Caritas was used as a Roman Christian name, and Charity entered English use among the Puritans after the Protestant Reformation. Today it is most common in parts of English-influenced Africa.
