Cheryl is an elaboration of Cherie, perhaps influenced by Beryl. The name was very rare before the 20th century and appears to have been popularized in America by actress Cheryl Walker (1918–1971), who had a prominent role in the 1943 film Stage Door Canteen. It peaked in popularity in the 1950s and later declined from the charts.
