Meaning and history
Chloe is a Greek name meaning “green shoot,” referring to new spring growth, and it was an epithet of the Greek goddess Demeter. The name is also mentioned by Paul in one of his New Testament epistles. In English, it has been used since the Protestant Reformation and grew more popular from the 1980s in the United Kingdom and then the United States; it was the most popular girls’ name in England and Wales from 1997 to 2002. It is also one of the few English names sometimes written with a diaeresis, as Chloë.
