Meaning and history
Cinderella means “little ashes,” partly from the French name Cendrillon, and is the central character in the folktale about a mistreated young woman who eventually marries a prince. The story is best known in the English-speaking world from Charles Perrault’s 1697 French version, and the character appears under other names in different languages, usually with meanings related to “ashes,” such as German Aschenputtel and Italian Cenerentola.
