Latinized form of Greek Κίρκη (Kirke), possibly derived from κίρκος (kirkos) meaning “hawk.” In Greek mythology, Circe was a sorceress who transformed Odysseus’s crew into hogs in Homer’s Odyssey; Odysseus compelled her to restore them, then remained with her for a year before resuming his voyage.
