Meaning and history
Clare is the medieval English form of Clara. In the English-speaking world, the French spelling Claire is now generally preferred, though Clare has remained fairly popular in the United Kingdom and Australia. It is also the name of an Irish county, probably derived from Irish clár meaning “plank” or “level surface.”
Clare rose from #949 to #924 for girls between 2024 and 2025. Its highest annual birth count came in 1998, with 510 births.
