Clark is an English surname derived from Old English clerec, originally meaning “priest” and later “cleric” or “scribe.” Notable bearers include William Clark (1770–1838), an explorer of western North America, and as a given name it has been used by the American actor Clark Gable (1901–1960) and by Clark Kent, the mild-mannered alter ego of Superman, first created in 1938.
