Claude is the French masculine and feminine form of Claudius. The male name has been common in France since the Middle Ages through 7th-century Saint Claude of Besançon and reached Britain with the French-connected Hamilton family in the 16th century. French Impressionist Claude Monet (1840–1926) was a famous bearer.
