Clelia is the Italian form of the ancient Roman feminine name Cloelia. Its deeper etymology is uncertain, although it has traditionally been associated with a Latin root concerning fame or renown. In Roman legend, Cloelia was a hostage who escaped the Etruscan camp by swimming across the Tiber and was honoured for her courage. Notable bearers include Saint Clelia Barbieri, an Italian religious founder, and Irish actor Clelia Murphy.
