Collins is an English given name transferred from a patronymic surname meaning “son of Colin.” Colin can be a medieval diminutive of Nicholas, from Greek Nikolaos, “victory of the people,” or derive through other family lines, so the remote meaning is not universal. Collins is now used independently for more than one gender. Notable bearers include Kenyan rugby player Collins Injera and Cameroonian footballer Collins Fai. It should not be confused with a plural occupational word.
