Meaning and history

Conán means “little wolf” or “little hound,” from Irish cú meaning “wolf” or “hound” with a diminutive suffix. It was borne by several early saints, including a 7th-century bishop of the Isle of Man, and appears in Irish legend as a companion of Fionn mac Cumhaill. Notable later uses include Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930), whose middle name was Conan, and Conan the Barbarian, the hero of a series of books, comics, and films that began in 1932.
