Confucius is the Anglicized form of the Chinese name Kong Fuzi, in which the surname 孔 (Kong) means “hole” or “opening” and the title 夫子 (Fuzi) means “master.” It refers to a 6th-century BC Chinese philosopher whose given name was Qiu.
