Cuthbert is derived from the Old English elements cuþ, meaning “known” or “familiar,” and beorht, meaning “bright.” The name was borne by Saint Cuthbert, a 6th-century hermit who became bishop of Lindisfarne off the coast of England and was مشهور for healing miracles. His cult kept the name in use in England after the Norman Conquest, though it became rare after the Protestant Reformation and was briefly revived in the 19th century.
