Meaning and history
Cybill is an English spelling variant of Sybil. Sybil comes from Greek Sibylla, the title for a female prophet or oracle in the ancient world. The Sibyls appeared in Greek and Roman literature and were later incorporated into Christian art and legend as pagan foretellers. The spelling Cybill was created from the names Cy and Bill for American actor Cybill Shepherd, its best-known bearer. It therefore combines ancient name history with a modern personal spelling.
