Diminutive of Cynthia, from the Greek Kynthia, "woman of Mount Kynthos," an epithet of the goddess Artemis, said to have been born on that mountain on Delos. American singer Cyndi Lauper (1953-), known for hits like "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," popularized this spelling.
