Meaning and history
Cyneburga is an Old English feminine name combining cyne, “royal,” with burg, “fortress” or “protection.” It may be interpreted as “royal fortress.” Saint Cyneburga was a seventh-century Mercian princess, daughter of King Penda, who founded and led an abbey at Castor. Her cult preserved the name in medieval religious history. The form is now archaic, and modern real-life bearers are exceptionally uncommon.
