Meaning and history
Cyrano is a French literary and historical name whose deeper etymology is uncertain, possibly arising from a family or place name. Its defining bearer was Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac, a seventeenth-century French writer known for imaginative works about journeys to the Moon and Sun. Edmond Rostand transformed him into the romantic hero of the 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac. Because of that work, the name is strongly associated with eloquence, wit, and unrequited love.
