Meaning and history
Cyrille is the French form of Cyril and is used mainly for men, though it can occasionally be feminine. Cyril derives from Greek Kyrillos, related to kyrios, meaning “lord” or “master.” Saints Cyril and Methodius, ninth-century missionaries associated with the Christianization and literary culture of Slavic peoples, gave the name major religious importance. Notable bearers include French cyclist and team director Cyrille Guimard and French-Cameroonian footballer Cyrille Makanaky.
