Meaning and history

Latinized form of the Greek Δαίδαλος (Daidalos), from δαιδάλλω (daidallo), meaning “to work cunningly.” In Greek myth, Daedalus was an Athenian inventor banished to Crete, where he designed the Labyrinth for King Minos. After helping Theseus against the Minotaur, he and his son Icarus were imprisoned there, then escaped on wings made of wax, though Icarus fell to his death.
