Meaning and history
Damián comes from the Greek name Δαμιανός (Damianos), derived from δαμάζω (damazo), meaning “to tame.” The name spread widely in Christian Europe because of Saint Damian, who was martyred with his twin brother Cosmas in Syria in the early 4th century and, together with him, became patron saint of physicians. It was also borne by Peter Damian, an 11th-century Italian cardinal and theologian.
