Meaning and history
Damon is derived from Greek δαμάζω (damazo), meaning “to tame.” In Greek legend, Damon and Pythias were friends in 4th-century BC Syracuse, where Pythias was temporarily released from a death sentence on the condition that Damon take his place in prison; when Pythias returned just before Damon was to be executed, the king was so moved by their loyalty that he pardoned Pythias. As an English given name, Damon has been used regularly only since the 20th century.
