Dan is a Hebrew name meaning "he judged." In the Old Testament, Dan is a son of Jacob and Bilhah and the ancestor of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. It is also widely used as a short form of Daniel, meaning "God is my judge." Notable bearers include actor Dan Aykroyd and author Dan Brown.
