Danuta is a Polish feminine name probably borrowed from Lithuanian Danutė. Its deeper origin is uncertain, and theories connecting it with Daniel or Lithuanian words are not securely established. The name became particularly familiar in Poland and Lithuania and should not be assigned a confident biblical meaning. Notable bearers include Polish actor Danuta Szaflarska and Danuta Wałęsa, writer and wife of Polish president Lech Wałęsa. Danka is a common affectionate form.
