Denisa is the Czech, Slovak, Romanian, and South Slavic feminine form of Denis. Denis derives from Greek Dionysios, meaning “of Dionysus,” the god of wine, theatre, ecstasy, and vegetation. Saint Denis, a third-century bishop and martyr associated with Paris, gave the name family an important Christian history separate from its pagan root. Notable bearers include Romanian poet and editor Denisa Comănescu and Czech fashion model Denisa Dvořáková.
