From a surname originally indicating someone from the manor of Denzell in Cornwall, Denzil became a given name used by several members of the noble Holles family from the 16th century onward, including the statesman Denzil Holles (1599–1680). The name was adopted in honor of John Denzel, an ancestor whose home was Denzell.
