Desiderio is the Italian and Spanish form of the Late Latin name Desiderius, derived from desiderium, meaning “desire,” “longing,” or “something wished for.” Several medieval saints and churchmen bore Desiderius, and it was also the name of the last king of the Lombards. Notable bearers include Italian Renaissance sculptor Desiderio da Settignano and Spanish-Mexican philosopher and historian Desiderio Navarro. Desirée is a related French feminine form with the sense “desired.”
