Diarmaid is a traditional Irish masculine name whose etymology is uncertain; the common interpretation “without enemy” is possible but not universally accepted. In Irish legend, Diarmaid Ua Duibhne is a warrior of the Fianna who elopes with Gráinne, inspiring the tale The Pursuit of Diarmuid and Gráinne. The name was later Anglicized as Dermot or Dermod.
